This profile is for Mary Catherine Smith, born about 1834, daughter of James Smith and Mary Trinkle.[1] Her calculated date of birth based on the death certificate is 26 April 1833. Reports of her age in census records very widely. If her age was reported correctly with her birth family in the 1850 census, she was likely born on 26 April 1834.
Mary C Smith married William T McKinster on 31 December 1848 in Washington Township, Washington, Indiana.[2][3][4] Mary would have been quite young at the time of the marriage (15 years, 8 months, 5 days if her death certificate is accurate). Her father was not named on the marriage license, though it did say she had the consent of her father.
In the 1850 census Mary C Smith (age 16) was in Posey Township, Washington, Indiana.[5]

It does seem odd that the 1850 census listed Mary C, age 16, with her parents and then 2 pages later listed Catharine McKinster, age 18, with her husband. Perhaps she wanted to seem older when she was enumerated with her husband?

Mary Catherine Smith McKinster, wife of William McKinster, daughter of James Smith & Mary Trinkle, died (age 67 years, 5 months and 26 days) on 22 October 1900 in Fredericksburg, Washington, Indiana, and was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Fredericksburg.[1][11] Death certificate informant was her daughter, Stella Wibel.
Interestingly, there is also a memorial with the same details in Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington County, Indiana: Mary Catherine Smith McKinster died on 22 October 1900 and was buried in Salem, Washington, Indiana.[12]
